Ludisia discolor, commonly known as the Jewel Orchid, is a terrestrial species native to the forest floors of Southeast Asia. Unlike epiphytic orchids, this species grows in rich, humus-laden substrates under dense canopy cover, making it exceptionally well-suited to low-light indoor environments. Its true appeal lies not in its modest flowers, but in its velvety, dark maroon foliage etched with iridescent copper, red, or pink venation—earning it its “jewel” status among orchid collectors.
This species remains compact, forming slow-growing rosettes with lateral rhizomes that may branch and spread over time. It produces upright inflorescences of small, fragrant white flowers—typically during late fall or winter.
Please Note: We try to photograph a good representation of the style, size and overall look of the plant category. Should there be specific variants (such as our Imperfect Plants) they will be marked as such. Each plant is unique in it's own way, so we cannot guarantee the exact number of leaf or stem counts.
Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate low light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can cause leaf burn and fading of colors.
Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Use filtered, distilled, or rainwater to avoid chlorine and fluoride, which can cause leaf browning.
Toxicity
Non-toxic to pets and humans, making it a great choice for homes with cats and dogs.
Fertilization
Feed with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer every 4 weeks in spring and summer. Avoid over-fertilizing, as it can lead to salt buildup. No need to fertilize in fall and winter.
