A striking and uncommon member of the Rubiaceae family, Pentagonia wendlandii is a tropical understory tree or large shrub admired for its dramatic foliage and architectural form. Endemic to the lush, lowland rainforests of Central America, this species thrives in moist, shaded habitats, often near rivers or in cloud forest transition zones.
The most distinctive feature of P. wendlandii is its broad, elliptic leaves, which can reach up to 3 feet (1 meter) in length, giving the plant an almost surreal, prehistoric appearance. The leaves are deeply veined, semi-glossy, and often tinged with red or bronze in new growth. Mature specimens may produce tubular, reddish-pink to crimson flowers, followed by berry-like fruits—traits consistent with its Rubiaceae lineage.
e typical of the family, with minute flowers often pollinated by small flies or beetles.
